8 Shoes Every Man Should Own

Brown Chelsea Boots

A man of style should have an arsenal of proper shoes to take him through his week, whatever it may involve. Think of them as items for your sartorial utility belt.

The styles should veer from formal to casual, come in different materials and shades of leather, hail from a variety of shoemakers and have soles that are appropriate for all weather conditions.

Here is the list I thought about ..

1. Black Cap Toe Oxford

These should be the first shoes a man should sink his capital into. You know how that last pair wouldn’t work for the dressier moments in your life? These will. Every time.

2. The Brown Brogues

They are a Scottish creation that have proved popular the world over. The term “brogue” is more about the decoration on a shoe rather than its cut, referring to the way that the surface is punctured and stitched to form a pattern.

Think of them as your workhorse shoe. Perfect with everything from jeans to suits, and appropriate for everything but formal occasions and (very) important meetings with (relatively) conservative business partners.

3. Chelsea Boots

They are close-fitting, ankle-high boots with an elastic side panel. They often have a loop or tab of fabric on the back of the boot, enabling the boot to be pulled on. The boot dates back to the Victorian era, when it was worn by both men and women.

If you’re in the market for two pairs, might I suggest getting one in leather and the other in suede?

4. Monk Straps

A monk shoe is a style of shoe with no lacing, closed by a buckle and strap. It is also known as a monk strap, and has been described as the “most advanced” dress shoe.

Because sometimes you want something with a bit more, well… personality than laces.

5. Chukka Boots

They are more dressed-up than a sneaker, but not quite as proper as hardbottoms. Your go-to option for a casual everyday outfit.

6. Driving Shoes

Like email or smartphones, driving moccasins are one of those 1990s inventions that modern man never knew he needed, yet now can’t imagine his life without.

7. Boat/Deck Shoes

For every other day in June, July, and August.

8. White Leather/Canvas Sneakers

Every man needs a pair of understated, off-duty sneakers.

In the near future I will think about adding a few more but for the beginning these item are more than enough to have variety and style.
